PROGRESS AND NEWSLETTER

The Waterside team celebrating at the Greenbank Hotel, Falmouth. We are having a great year, helping our patients in so many different dental ways.

We now have a Healozone. This enables us to treat tooth decay before you can see it! It means you can often avoid any drilling and filling. Ozone has been used for years to kill bacteria but only recently on teeth. Find out more by going to www.the-o-zone.cc/ and be excited by what Ozone treatment can do for you.

We are using a wonderful new image scanning device to help people understand more of what is going on in their mouths. The Sopro Intraoral Camera hot plugs into the PC in the treatment room and enables those who come to us for care to see exactly what we do to help their teeth and gums

Martin Wills has been working recently as an external examiner for the Internal Qualifying Examinations at Guys Hospital London. Here he has been responsible ,with other dentists, for reviewing clinical work and treatment standards by dentists wishing to work in the UK. This new appointment is in addition to the work he has done with the Royal College of Surgeons examining dentists for the MFGDP.

Our Awards

In July 2007 our team at Waterside Dentalcare won the prestigious Preventive Practice of the Year. This was presented to us by Oral B, in recogntion of our unique approach in dealing with gum disease. This is a National Award and we are delighted to show that the best dental practices are not necessarily in the big cities.

In 2004 our team at Waterside Dentalcare was selected as a finalist for the Private Dentistry National Dental Awards

This is a new award for the Most Innovative Dental Practice in the UK and we were selected as one of only seven other dental practices nationwide.
245 other entries were received and we all enjoyed a lavish lunch in November at the Cafe Royal in London's West End.

In 2001 we won another National Award, the "Best Dental Practice Environment".This is awarded annualy to the dental practice with the best ambience, style and situation.

Have gum disease treated as soon as possible, if not to save your teeth perhaps to save your heart!

Heart Disease and Periodontal Disease
We have known for a long time that bacteria may affect the heart. Now there is growing evidence to suggest that people with periodontal disease, which is fundamentally a bacterial infection, may be at more risk for heart disease. They may also have nearly twice the risk of of having a fatal heart attack than people without periodontal disease.

While more research is needed to confirm how periodontal disease may affect your heart, one possibility is that periodontal bacteria enter the blood through the inflamed gums and cause small blood clots that contribute to clogged arteries.

Diabetes and Periodontal Disease
For many years we have known that diabetics are more likely to have periodontal disease than non-diabetics.

Current research has shown that the relationship goes both ways. Untreated periodontal disease may make it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar. In other words controlling periodontal disease may help you to control your blood sugar.

Respiratory and Periodontal Disease
It is possible that if you have periodontal disease you may be at an increased risk for respiratory diseases. What we know so far is that mouth infections like periodontal disease are associated with an increased risk for respiratory infections. More research is needed to understand this relationship but the association seems clear.

Tom Cross has kindly loaned us some more of his wonderful paintings. We have chosen this selection for their relaxing qualities and our patients certainly seem to appreciate them.

Art and dentistry goes so well together.

Sally Wills also has some work on show. Mosaic and batik are placed all around waterside.

Why not come to waterside dentalcare for art's sake!
