If treatment to replace missing teeth involves dental implants it is essential that any gum health problems are addressed before the implants are placed. Implants are susceptible to the equivalent of periodontal disease for teeth, it is known as peri-implantitis.
Peri-implantitis occurs when bacteria live in deep gum pockets around an implant tooth. If the gum pocket is deep enough, the environment for the bacteria changes and more harmful bacteria take over. The gum then becomes more inflamed and the bone is lost around the implant. Peri-implantitis results in the loss of dental implants over time and a compromised aesthetic result.
Patients who have dental implants need to clean very carefully every day at home and have regular visits with a dentist or dental hygienist who is comfortable treating patients with dental implants.
At Waterside Dentalcare we are very careful to look out for the first signs of peri-implant gum problems and then act appropriately when they are found. If you are concerned that you may have a problem with your dental implants we would be happy to see and help you.
